The Brain WebQuest

Introduction

During the next two days, you will be searching selected websites searching for information about the specific parts and areas of the brain.

Your first step is to read through this page in its entirety to get an understanding of the task ahead of you.  Once you have read through the directions on this page, you are ready to start clicking links and researching the human brain!

The Task

For this task, you and you partner will become internet investigators, traveling through the internet as you search for information about the human brain.  By the end of your adventure, you will have a wealth of information on the most basic parts and functions of the human brain.

The Process

Use the websites below to find information.  You and your partner will need to research and TAKE NOTES first in order to answer some of the questions.  Just worry about getting the big ideas written down.  All of the final writing needs to be in your own words on your evaluation sheet.

http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/nsdivide.html#
A straight-forward website that breaks down basic information about the nervous system.

http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/Phineas-Gage-Neurosciences-Most-Famous-Patient.html#
A great source a detailing the story of Phineas Gage and his traumatic brain injury.

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/brain_basics/know_your_brain.htm

Very dense text with more information than most other sites.  This could be your go-to for most questions!

http://frank.mtsu.edu/~studskl/hd/hemis.html
A great website on brain hemispheres.  Contains the brain Hemispheric Dominance Inventory.

http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/image.html
Lots of information on brain scans!

You are also welcome to Google any topic you are interested in.  Use this as a last resort, however.  I took a lot of time to make sure each question had a correlating website!  And NO WIKIPEDIA ALLOWED!

Evaluation

You will be assessed based on your responses to the questions on the WebQuest handout (AKA evaluation sheet).  Please answer each question carefully and completely, and in complete sentences unless otherwise stated.

Conclusion

Now that you have finished, it is time to reflect on what you have done.  Answer the following questions independent from your partner on a separate sheet of paper.  Make sure to staple your responses to your evaluation sheet.

What was interesting about the information you found?

What surprised or shocked you?

What would you like to know more about?

How does this task and information relate to our lives today?

Make sure to turn in your notes and answers before you leave tomorrow!
